Legacy Ridge Golf Course Review

Legacy Ridge Overview

Legacy Ridge Golf Course is a municipal golf course located in Westminster, Colorado. The course, designed by renowned golf course architect Arthur Hills, offers a blend of challenging play, stunning natural scenery, and remarkable layout that appeals to golfers of various skill levels. The course is meticulously crafted to harmonize with the natural landscape of Colorado, providing a tranquil yet exciting golfing environment. I love playing Legacy Ridge Golf Course because of its approachability yet challenging layout for weekend golfers, casual golfers, and even the experienced low handicap golfers out there. From family tees to the tips (Champion teebox), the course can range in length from as short as 3,011 yards all the way up to 7,074 yards. With plenty of opportunity out there to score, Legacy Ridge is one of my personal favorite golf courses in Colorado.

Golf Course Design

Designed by the acclaimed golf architect Arthur Hills, Legacy Ridge Golf Course has garnered a reputation for its meticulous design, challenging play, and the breathtaking natural backdrop it provides to golfers in a links style layout. Let's delve into the architect's involvement, the design process, and the key features that make Legacy Ridge a standout golfing destination and, in my opinion, one of the best values for golfing in Colorado.

Arthur Hills, a revered name in the golf architecture world, is renowned for his ability to create courses that are harmoniously integrated with the natural environment. His designs are celebrated for their strategic and thoughtful layout, offering a blend of aesthetic appeal and playability. Legacy Ridge is no exception to Hills’ signature style, presenting a course that is both challenging and accessible to golfers of various skill levels.

Key Features of Legacy Ridge

  • Yardage and Par: Legacy Ridge spans 7,074 yards and plays to a par of 72. The course is designed to challenge and engage golfers, providing varying degrees of difficulty that cater to both novice and seasoned players.
  • Colorado-Style Scottish Links Layout: The course features a Colorado-style Scottish links layout, which is characterized by wide fairways, generous landing areas, and large greens that average over 6,000 square feet. This layout style is known for its strategic design, requiring golfers to navigate through various natural obstacles and strategically placed bunkers.
  • Tee Boxes: The course offers four tee boxes on every hole, ensuring that golfers of all skill levels can enjoy and engage with the course in a manner that is suited to their playing ability.
  • Natural Beauty: Legacy Ridge is set against a backdrop of stunning natural elements, including mountain views and wetlands, providing a tranquil and visually spectacular golfing experience.
  • Affordability: Despite its high-quality design and exceptional playing experience, Legacy Ridge offers affordable pricing and various programs, ensuring that the joy of golfing is accessible to a wide range of players.

Golf Course Playability

Legacy Ridge is known for its playability, offering varying levels of challenge that cater to both novice and seasoned golfers. The course layout is strategic and thoughtful, with each hole offering a unique challenge and requiring different skills to navigate successfully. Golfers can expect a mix of terrains, from undulating fairways to strategically placed bunkers, ensuring a stimulating round of golf. The course is designed to be inclusive and enjoyable for all, with multiple tee boxes available to accommodate different playing abilities.

The reason I love to play Legacy Ridge golf course and one of the reasons I think it is one of the best golf courses in Colorado is because of the varying tee boxes. On any given round of golf, I may feel like testing my skills from the Champion tees (or "the tips") or see how well I can score from the Blue tees. In my experience, and if you play the course from multiple tees, you will find that the varying lengths of each hole make for a unique challenge each time. It almost feels as if you are playing a new course from the Blues, Blacks, and Champion tees. Naturally, I always recommend that golfers play the tees that they feel most comfortable from and that match your GHIN as close as possible.

Legacy Ridge Golf Course, nestled in the picturesque city of Westminster, Colorado, is a haven for golf enthusiasts, offering a blend of playability and challenges that cater to golfers across the spectrum, from beginners to seasoned players. Below, I delve into the aspects that make Legacy Ridge golf course a unique and engaging golfing destination.

Approachability for Beginners:

Multiple Tee Boxes:

  • Legacy Ridge features multiple tee boxes on every hole, ensuring that players of all skill levels can find a comfortable and suitable playing distance.
  • Beginners can opt for forward tees, reducing the yardage and providing a more accessible playing experience.

Generous Fairways:

  • The fairways at Legacy Ridge are notably wide and forgiving, allowing beginners some leeway with their drives and approach shots.
  • The spacious fairways reduce the pressure on tee shots, allowing novice players to play more confidently.

Large Greens:

  • The greens at Legacy Ridge are expansive, providing larger target areas for approach shots.
  • The sizable greens also offer beginners more room for error on their putts, making the putting experience less daunting.

Educational Programs:

  • Legacy Ridge offers various golf programs and lessons, providing beginners with the opportunity to learn and enhance their skills in a supportive environment.
  • Junior Golf Club and other youth programs encourage young players to develop their skills and love for the game.

Challenges for Skilled Players:

Strategic Bunkering:

  • Legacy Ridge features strategically placed bunkers that challenge the decision-making and shot execution of skilled players.
  • Navigating around or playing from these bunkers requires precision and skill, providing an engaging challenge.

Varied Terrain:

  • The course utilizes the natural rolling topography of Colorado, presenting undulating fairways and greens that demand accurate shot placement and strategic play.
  • Elevation changes throughout the course require players to adjust their shot selection and club choice accordingly.

Water Hazards:

  • Water hazards are integrated into the course design, requiring players to approach certain holes with caution and strategy.
  • Skilled players must weigh the risk and reward of navigating over these hazards, particularly on approach shots and par-3s.

Wind Factors:

  • The open layout of the course can expose players to varying wind conditions, requiring adjustments to shot shape and club selection.
  • Skilled players will need to account for the wind to manage their game effectively across the course.

Competitive Play:

  • Legacy Ridge hosts various tournaments and league plays, providing skilled players with a platform to compete and test their abilities against others.
  • The competitive environment encourages skilled players to navigate the course’s challenges under tournament conditions.

Golf Course Amenities & Facilities

Legacy Ridge Golf Course offers a few amenities that I feel are worth calling out as your plan your next visit:

Located in Westminster, Colorado

Westminster, Colorado, is a vibrant city that beautifully marries urban living with a touch of nature. Nestled between Denver and Boulder, it offers a rich tapestry of cultural, art, and musical experiences that reflect the spirit of Colorado. I personally love Westminster municipal golf courses as one of its main attractions and appeals as they offer some of the more affordable, desirable, and scenic rounds of golf in Colorado. Any time that I have a visitor in town asking for recommendations on good value for golf, I think Westminster offers some of the best in the state of Colorado.

Westminster is adorned with numerous public art installations, from whimsical sculptures to thought-provoking murals, enhancing the visual appeal of the community. Westminster's Historic District provides a glimpse into the city’s past, while the various museums, like the Bowles House Museum, narrate its history and heritage.

The city pulses with musical vibrancy, hosting various concerts, and live performances across genres, from classical symphonies to contemporary bands, at venues like the Westminster Music Centre. Cultural festivals, such as the Westy Craft Brew Fest and the Harvest Festival, celebrate the local crafts, cuisine, and community spirit.

The Butterfly Pavilion and the Standley Lake Regional Park offer immersive experiences in nature, providing both recreational and educational opportunities. Westminster, with its blend of art, culture, and natural beauty, stands as a city where history, nature, and modern life coalesce into a rich, colorful experience.

Pros and Cons

For any list of pros and cons of a golf course, it is extremely important to keep in mind the skill level of the person publishing the review as well as the overall outcome of the round. It is important that Planet Divot writers remove their personal outcomes with the objective qualities of the courses we review. Here are the pros and cons of Riverdale Dunes Golf Course:

Pros:

  • Scenic Beauty:
  • Like I have mentioned throughout this review, Legacy Ridge Golf Course is renowned for its stunning natural beauty, offering golfers panoramic views of the Colorado landscape, including the Front Range mountains. There are also plenty of native plants out on the course for your enjoyment.
  • Inclusivity:
  • With multiple tee boxes on each hole, the course is designed to be accessible and enjoyable for golfers of all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned players. I love coming here because I can bring anyone!
  • Well-Maintained Course:
  • The course has strong maintenance, providing golfers with pristine playing conditions, well-kept fairways, and smooth greens throughout the year.
  • Course Design:
  • Designed by Arthur Hills, the course features a strategic layout that provides a stimulating and thought-provoking round of golf, requiring players to utilize a variety of shots and strategies.
  • Amenities and Programs:
  • Legacy Ridge offers a range of amenities, including a pro shop, practice facilities, and dining options, as well as various programs and events, enhancing the overall golfing community and experience. You can tell when visiting Legacy Ridge during peak season that this place exists as a golf course and so much more!

Cons:

  • Pricing:
  • Some golfers might find the pricing for rounds and memberships to be on the higher side, especially during peak seasons, which could be a barrier for some. The way I try to make this course and many others more affordable is by walking, which I highly recommend for Legacy Ridge Golf Course!
  • Pace of Play:
  • During busy periods, the pace of play can be slower, which might impact the experience for golfers who prefer a quicker round. One way to avoid the crowds is by playing a twilight round or during the weekdays.
  • Availability:
  • Given its popularity, securing desired tee times, especially during weekends and holidays, might be challenging, requiring golfers to book well in advance. I always recommend to anyone playing golf in Colorado to book your tee times in advance. It's critical for making sure your rounds are secured. Please note that some courses have booking restrictions.
  • Difficulty for Novices:
  • While the course is designed to be inclusive, certain holes might present significant challenges for novice golfers, potentially impacting their enjoyment and confidence. Play to the best of your ability and just prepare yourself for a challenge or two out there.
  • Limited Public Transit Options:
  • Accessibility might be an issue for those relying on public transit, as options might be limited, making it more convenient for those with private transportation. We include this as a Con because Planet Divot aims to be as inclusive as possible. Not all golfers have the privilege of their own vehicle and require public transportation to get from Point A to B.

Conclusion

Legacy Ridge Golf Course, with its splendid design, challenging play, and serene environment, stands out as a premier golfing destination in Westminster, Colorado. Legacy Ridge Golf Course masterfully balances playability and challenge, ensuring that every golfer, regardless of their skill level, finds enjoyment and engagement on the course. The thoughtful design allows beginners to navigate the course with confidence while still providing ample challenges to test the skills of more experienced golfers. Whether you're a seasoned golfer looking for your next challenge or a beginner seeking a friendly round, Legacy Ridge promises a memorable golfing experience. Coupled with the vibrant and welcoming city of Westminster, a trip here is more than just a golfing getaway – it's an exploration of sport, nature, and leisure.
