Written by: Tony Schwartz

Last Updated: August 8, 2024

Professional golf's summer calendar has led us to The Open Championship being held at the esteemed Royal Troon Golf Club from July 18 - 21, 2024. Just off of the south bay of Troon in the United Kingdom, golf's next major is being played at the world renowned golf club which has hosted a total of seven Opens since 1962. We couldn't be more excited about how much parity seems to exist in professional golf while also hosting Scottie Scheffler's historic season. The storylines heading into The Open are abound and we are looking forward to keeping you all in the loop on the latest news, coverage, leaderboard, and stories coming out of Troon, UK this weekend.

Xander Schauffele Wins The Open Championship

When it was all said and done at the 2024 Open Championship, the 152nd Open held at Royal Troon, Xander Schauffele emerged victorious with Claret Jug in-hand, yet another major victory in the 2024 PGA Tour season, and capping off a major run this season that should be respected and acknowledged, even amidst the glorious run of Scottie Scheffler.

Xander Schauffele has either won or finished in the top 10 of every major this season, including the Olympics and a T-2 finish at THE PLAYERS Championship. Read that again!

With these stellar performances under his belt, Xander Schauffele just doubled his PGA Tour earnings year over year while everyone talked about Scottie's historic run. The rundown of performances by Xander is to be respected as one of the best seasons of golf that we've seen in the last decade.

How to Watch The British Open Championship 2024

If you're looking for ways to watch The British Open at Royal Troon this year we've got you covered with a detailed breakdown below. I'm loving that professional golf tournaments, especially the major tournaments, are viewable for free on the web. Giving people more access to the game is exactly what Planet Divot is all about. That said, our favorite way to watch the tournament so far is online at TheOpen.com. For a more detailed look at how to watch The Open, here is the daily schedule:

Television: While Peacock and USA exist behind a paywall, NBC is typically available for free via broadcast signal. If you're looking for low cost ways to access The Open then you might consider an antenna to view the weekend coverage on NBC.

  • Friday: 1:30-4 a.m. (Peacock), 4 a.m.-3 p.m. (USA), 3-4:15 p.m. (Peacock)
  • Saturday: 5-7 a.m. (USA), 7 a.m.-3 p.m. (NBC)
  • Sunday: 4-7 a.m. (USA), 7 a.m.-2 p.m. (NBC)

Radio: Championship broadcasts will begin on SiriusXM (Channel 92) and on the SXM App on Friday at 2 a.m.

  • Friday: 2 a.m.-conclusion of play
  • Saturday-Sunday: 4 a.m.-conclusion of play

Online: Various feeds available via https://www.randa.tv/schedule - This particular option is great for free content, though you will need to create a username and password to access the live feeds. From what I can tell, access to featured groups, holes, players, and coverage is available for free after creating an account.

Where is The Open Championship Being Played?

Nestled on the scenic west coast of Scotland, The 2024 British Open is being played at Royal Troon Golf Club. Home to 10 Open Championships, Royal Troon of Scotland is considered one of the most historic courses in the golf world.

Established in 1878, Royal Troon boasts a challenging links-style course and provides a true test of golfing skill as the course is accentuated by its rugged coastal beauty and unpredictable Scottish weather. Rain, wind, and firm conditions are to be expected in this year's tournament.

Royal Troon features the renowned Old Course, celebrated for its classic, undulating fairways and deep bunkers. The signature hole is called "Postage Stamp" - the 8th hole, and is particularly famous for its small green surrounded by hazards, requiring an exacting tee shot.

The course goes out on the first 9 at 3,539 yards and back in at 3,846 yards for a total of 7,385 yards. The 4th Hole (Dunure) and 6th Hole (Turnberry) are the course's longest at 599 and 623 yards respectively. Although, the back 9 boasts more than 300 yards than the front 9 so distance of the course combined with weather elements could produce a winning score that's higher than average. A lot depends on the weather with this year's Open Championship.

The Open Championship Leaderboard

Part of Planet Divot's commitment to coverage of professional golf is to produce a consolidated leaderboard for our readers, especially for professional golf's major tournaments. With The Open Championship currently underway, here is our leaderboard showing the top players in contention for the lead at Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland.

Latest News

Updated Sunday July 21, 2024 at 11:02a CST

We've arrived at championship Sunday and just 9 holes left to compete. Scores over the weekend have stayed moderated around -7 to -3 atop the leaderboard. It is South African Thriston Lawrence maintaining an outright lead with only a few holes left to play. Xander Schauffele remains a threat along with local favorite Justin Rose.  Shane Lowry has dropped a few strokes from the lead he commanded heading into the weekend, and is now in the 6th position. Though, his play has certainly improved on Sunday (-2 thru 14). The players who are having the strongest Sunday rounds are sitting atop the leaderboard: Thriston Lawrence (-4 thru 11), Xander Schauffele (-3 thru 12), and Justin Rose (-2 thru 12). Stay tuned for these last 5-6 holes of major championship play!

With Round 2 nearly complete for all players it is Shane Lowry who is commanding the lead at The Open Championship. Shane has been masterful in back to back days shooting 66, 69 heading into the upcoming weekend. He has a two-shot lead on the pair of Englishmen who trail him, Justin Rose and Daniel Brown. What you have to admire about Shane Lowry is the poise that he showed after carding a double bogey on the 11th hole. To then come back with 4 straight pars and go -2 on the remaining 7 holes is what champions are made of. No matter the outcome of this tournament, Shane Lowry showed all of us that he has mental fortitude and the ability to withstand moments in golf that are able to ruin the best of players. Applause to Shane and the way in which he's showcased his talents at this year's Open Championship. If he continues his sub-70 average into the weekend then he will be buoying his top ranking position and making his lead pretty difficult to overcome.

Justin Rose, perennial factor that he is, trails Shane by just 2 strokes along with the relatively unknown (to me) Englishman Dan Brown. Both sitting at -5 heading into the weekend, Scottie Scheffler lurks. His presence in every tournament has to create some sort of energy, attention, and intensity for any player who sits above him in the standings. Scottie posted a more consistent second round of the tournament after having a 4-hole bogey streak in Round 1. Certainly uncharacteristic for Scottie Scheffler, but isn't it relieving to know he actually is human after all?!

This weekend's weather conditions will most obviously play a factor. With temperatures expected to stay in the low 60s and wind and rain abound, players like Shane Lowry are amazingly capable of withstanding these types of conditions to produce great results. In fact, he's looked so solid in these first two rounds despite the weather that he seems to be in one of the best positions given the weather ahead. Royal Troon has plenty of bogeys, double bogeys, and birdies to hand out to these players over the weekend, so let's all stay tuned!

What is the cut for The Open Championship?

The projected cutline for The Open Championship currently sits at +6. Scores climbed a bit on Friday to produce a higher cutline than was initially forecasted after Round 1. What's interesting about this year's cut line is that it is higher than the last 3 Open Championships (+3, E, and +1 respectively) and 2 shots more than the cutline in 2016 at Royal Troon (+4). Conditions seem to be pretty tough out there for the world's best golfers.

The Open Championship Cut Rules

After 36 holes, the low 70 players and ties will advance to compete in the final two rounds on the weekend. Anyone finishing worse than 70th + ties will miss the cut. Only those making the cut earn official money from the $17 million purse available at the 152nd Open Championship.
